Xinjiang is conventionally split by the Tianshan range (
天山) into
南疆 (south, centered on the Tarim Basin and cities like Kashgar and Hotan — majority Uyghur) and
北疆 (north, centered on Urumqi and the Junggar Basin — more Han, Kazakh). The split is geographic, cultural, and economic.
