Tips

history
Zhang Ying (张英), a Grand Secretary under the Kangxi Emperor, got a letter from home about a wall dispute with the neighbouring Wu family. He wrote back 千里修书只为墙,让他三尺又何妨 ('a letter from a thousand li, all for a wall? Let them have three feet, what harm is there?'). His family moved their wall back three chi, the Wu family did the same, and the gap became a lane six chi, about two metres, wide.
usage
The lane, about 100 metres long, is a sight of 桐城, and its name has become a byword for neighbourly give and take.
