Together with 顾炎武 (Gu Yanwu) and 王夫之 (Wang Fuzhi), Huang Zongxi is one of the 'Three Great Confucians of the Late Ming' (明末三大儒), Ming loyalists who turned to scholarship after refusing to serve the Qing.
Huang Zongxi's 1663 political treatise critiquing imperial autocracy and proposing limits on monarchy — sometimes called 'China's earliest democratic thinking', and influential on late-Qing reformers.
