Largely self-taught, he started as a woodcut artist in the 1940s and only turned to colored ink painting in middle age. His 1980 Year of the Monkey stamp (庚申猴) became the most coveted postage stamp in PRC philately.

Uncle of poet Shen Congwen. Lived in his ancestral Fenghuang town (凤凰古城) and in a Beijing studio he called 万荷堂 (Hall of Ten Thousand Lotuses), stuffed with his collection of odd objects.
