Shunde was named a UNESCO City of Gastronomy in 2014, and an old Cantonese saying runs 食在广州，厨出凤城, 'eat in Guangzhou, but the chefs come from Fengcheng', Fengcheng being Shunde's old nickname. It is also home to the appliance makers 美的 (Midea) and 格兰仕 (Galanz).
