history
Originally meant 'saddle and horse' or 'saddled horse' - the gymnastics apparatus (a wooden 'horse' with two handles/pommels) was named for its resemblance to a saddled mount. The literary phrase 鞍马劳顿 (ānmǎ láodùn) still means 'weary from long travel by horse'.
