history

阮籍 of the Wei-Jin period looked straight at people he esteemed, showing the dark of his eyes (青眼), and turned the whites (白眼) on people he scorned. From this come 青睐 "to look on with favour" and 白眼 "a contemptuous look". 青 here means black, the colour of the pupils.
