The term entered official vocabulary with the 1980s rural reforms:
集市贸易 — periodic rural fairs — was one of the first forms of private commerce re-legalised after the planned economy. Today
集贸市场 covers both the rural periodic market and the everyday urban wet market (
菜市场).
