Altun means 'gold' in Turkic and Mongolian, so these are the Golden Mountains, and 金 'gold' even turns up in the Chinese spelling. The full name of the range is 阿尔金山.

The Altun Mountains Nature Reserve, set up in 1983 in 若羌 County, Xinjiang, protects herds of Tibetan antelope, wild yak and Tibetan wild ass. With 可可西里, 羌塘 and 罗布泊 it is counted among China's four great no man's lands (无人区).
