culture
Two Tang poems made the name famous: in 李白's 《长干行》 a young wife looks back on growing up there with her husband, and 崔颢's four 《长干曲》 are songs of the river people. 里 in 长干里 means 'lanes; neighbourhood'.
history
干 is read gān here. It is traditionally explained as an old southern word for the strip of land between hills, which is where the long lanes of the quarter ran.
