history
Published in 1627 with 40 stories, it is the last of 冯梦龙's three collections, the 三言, after 喻世明言 (around 1620) and 警世通言 (1624). With the two collections of 凌濛初, the 二拍, they make up 三言二拍, the core of Ming vernacular fiction.
memory
The three titles share one pattern: a verb, then 世 'the world', then a kind of 言 'words'. 喻 is to instruct, 警 to warn and 醒 to wake: plain words to instruct the world, common words to warn it, lasting words to wake it up.
