usage
Always in 酗酒 ('to drink excessively / be a drunkard'). It carries a strongly negative tone — uncontrolled, harmful drinking, often with disorderly behavior — not casual social drinking.
Left side 酉 is a pictograph of a wine jar; it is the radical for all alcohol-related words. It anchors the meaning in drinking. Same family as 酒 wine, 醉 drunk, 酿 to brew.
Right side 凶 gives the sound (xiōng → xù) and adds real meaning: drinking that turns 'violent and disorderly.' The combination paints a dangerous drunk, not a merry one.
