usage
辶 is colloquially called 走之 (zǒuzhī) or 走之旁 — the 'walking-foot side'. It wraps around the bottom-left of a character and almost guarantees motion semantics: 进 (enter), 退 (retreat), 还 (return), 过 (cross), 远 (far), 近 (near), 这 (this — pointing motion), 那 (that), 道 (way/road), 通 (go through). Never written as a standalone word.
history
辶 is the simplified handwriting form of 辵 (chuò), the canonical Kangxi #162. 辵 itself was a compound of 彳 (step) + 止 (foot) — a person striding. In modern Chinese 辵 has become extinct outside the Kangxi list; everyday writing uses three-stroke 辶 as the productive radical.
