Tips

history
曹操 wrote it in 207, on his way back from a campaign against the 乌桓 (Wuhuan), after climbing 碣石, a hill near the Bohai coast. It opens 东临碣石,以观沧海, 'east I came to Jieshi, to look upon the blue sea', and is one part of his suite 步出夏门行.
culture
Its best-known line is 秋风萧瑟,洪波涌起, 'the autumn wind sighs, great waves surge up'. In 1954 毛泽东 answered it in his ci 《浪淘沙·北戴河》: 萧瑟秋风今又是, 'the sighing autumn wind is here again'.
