A bride was carried to the groom's home in a red
花轿 with four or eight bearers, so
坐花轿 came to mean 'to get married'.
八抬大轿, 'an eight-bearer sedan', the grandest kind, survives in flat refusals: 'you couldn't get me there even with an eight-bearer sedan'.
