history

Birthplace of Cai Lun (蔡伦, c. 50-121 CE), the Han eunuch traditionally credited with inventing modern paper. The city has a Cai Lun Memorial Hall (蔡伦纪念园). The name 耒阳 comes from being on the north (sunny — 阳) side of the Lei River (耒水).
