Nanyang is traditionally identified with
卧龙岗 — the thatched cottage (
诸葛庐) where Zhuge Liang (
诸葛亮) lived as a recluse before Liu Bei's famous 'three visits to the thatched cottage' (
三顾茅庐) recruited him. The city also claims Eastern Han polymath Zhang Heng (
张衡) and physician Zhang Zhongjing (
张仲景).
