Liuyang has made fireworks since the Tang dynasty and today produces well over half of all fireworks sold in the world. The city is named after the
浏阳河 (Liuyang River), which in turn is the subject of 《
浏阳河》, one of the most famous Mao-era folk songs — a staple of propaganda-era repertoire you still hear at every karaoke.
