history

Called 盛京 during the early Qing, when it served as the Manchu capital before the move to Beijing in 1644. The Shenyang Imperial Palace (沈阳故宫) remains a UNESCO site. Shenyang is also associated with the 九一八事变 (Mukden Incident, 1931) that began Japan's invasion of northeast China.

Simplified 沈 vs. traditional 瀋: the Shenyang 沈 is a merged form. Mainland 沈阳 is always 沈 in simplified text; Taiwan writes 瀋阳 in traditional.
