Three-drops water radical — the side-form of
水, the indexing radical. The oracle-bone form of
沈 pictured an animal being lowered into water as a sacrifice, so the radical is doing real work here: it marks immersion, sinking, drowning. Today the verb sense survives in the variant reading
沉 chén.
