绪论 is the formal opening chapter of an academic monograph or thesis — distinct from
序 (xù, foreword, often by another author),
引言 (yǐnyán, introductory remarks, shorter), and
前言 (qiányán, preface). When writing a Chinese thesis,
绪论 is the standard label for chapter 1.
