mistakes
竖立 and 树立 sound identical. This one is physical, a pole, a sign, a monument going up. The other is abstract, used with things like 信心 and 榜样. Nothing you can touch takes it.
usage
竖 is the vertical axis, the opposite of 横. Standing a box on end is 竖着放, laying it flat is 横着放, and the downstroke in a character is also a 竖.
