usage
Gender-neutral cover term combining 男朋友 + 女朋友. Often used when the speaker doesn't want to specify or is asking about both sides of a couple: 你们是男女朋友吗 = 'are you two dating?'. More formal / explicit alternative to the slangier 对象.
