usage
生 'raw' against 熟 'cooked' runs through both senses. In medicine 生地, short for 生地黄, is the dried raw root and cools the body, while 熟地 is steamed with rice wine and warms it. On a farm 生地 is land never worked, and 熟地 land long under the plough.
