The order of the names is traditional. 杨炯 is said to have grumbled 愧在卢前，耻居王后: ashamed to come before Lu, unhappy to come after Wang. 杜甫 answered those who sneered at the four in 戏为六绝句: 尔曹身与名俱灭，不废江河万古流.
