Tips

culture
In 汤显祖's play the stroll and the dream are a single scene. Kunqu splits it into 游园, where 杜丽娘 walks through the neglected spring garden, and 惊梦, where she dreams of the scholar 柳梦梅. Performed together they are the part of the 牡丹亭 that most people know.
history
In 白先勇's story, part of his collection 台北人 'Taipei People', a former Kunqu singer attends a party in Taipei and is asked to sing this piece; memories of her life in Nanjing overwhelm her and her voice fails. He later produced the 'youth version' of the 牡丹亭 in 2004.
