In writing about architecture the word means vernacular housing, the ordinary local house type: 四合院 courtyards in 北京, 土楼 roundhouses in 福建, 窑洞 cave homes cut into the loess plateau.
usage
Written and collective: it names houses as a category, seen from the outside. Nobody calls their own place a 民居, that is 房子 or simply 家.
