Short-track speed skater who won China's first Winter Olympic gold medals, in the 500 m and 1000 m at Salt Lake City in 2002. Called 大杨扬 beside her teammate 小杨阳; later a member of the IOC.
Her name and her teammate's sound identical: 杨扬 with 扬 'raise', 杨阳 with 阳 'sun'. In competition abroad a letter told them apart: she was first 'L' for large, as the elder, disliked it, and switched to 'A' for August, her birth month.
