Tips

culture
李商隐 wrote that he rode out with an old brocade bag, dropping in lines as they came, and his mother said he would not stop until he coughed up his heart. From her words comes 呕心, 'spitting out one's heart', for agonising over writing, as in 呕心沥血.
history
He was kept from the 进士 examination because his father's name began with 晋, which sounds the same as 进, and a son was not supposed to use his father's name. 韩愈 protested in the essay 讳辩 'On Taboo Names', in vain.
