The English term 'digital nomad' is from 1997 but Chinese usage boomed post-COVID. By 2025 communes in Dali (Yunnan), Anji (Zhejiang) and Chiang Mai had become household names, and state media started debating whether the lifestyle was a viable alternative to the 996 office grind. Named a 2025 Top 10 buzzword by 《咬文嚼字》.
