Tips

culture
The whole song: 敕勒川,阴山下。天似穹庐,笼盖四野。天苍苍,野茫茫,风吹草低见牛羊。 'By the Chile River, below the Yin Mountains, the sky is like a felt tent covering the wilds on every side. The sky is deep blue, the plain is endless, and where the wind bends the grass, cattle and sheep appear.' In the last line 见 means 'to appear'.
history
The song was first sung in a steppe language, probably that of the 鲜卑 (Xianbei), and survives in Chinese translation. Tradition says that in 546, after a failed siege, the Eastern Wei commander 高欢 had his general 斛律金 sing it to the troops and joined in himself.
