Tips

history
The Xianbei spread over the eastern steppe once the 匈奴 moved west in the 1st and 2nd centuries. In the Northern Dynasties several Xianbei clans ruled north China, and Emperor Xiaowen ordered his court to take up Chinese dress, speech and surnames: the royal 拓跋 became 元. The Sui and Tang ruling houses also had Xianbei blood.
culture
The steppe song 《敕勒歌》 is believed to have been translated from the Xianbei language, which is why its lines are of uneven length.
