usage
Literary. The standout phrase is 深孚众望 (to enjoy deep public trust). Note the contrast with the similar-looking 不孚众望 (to fail to live up to expectations), which is often confused with 不负众望 (to not let people down).
The child radical beneath the hand. A bird hatching eggs on schedule, or a parent over a child, gave the character its meaning of keeping faith and being trusted.
A hand reaching down from above. Over a child it pictures a bird brooding or a parent protecting, the source image behind the sense of reliability and trust.
