history
When Portuguese sailors landed beside the temple in the 16th century, they are said to have asked the name of the place and heard 妈阁 (maa¹ gok³), which became Macau. The temple goes back to the late 15th century and is part of the Historic Centre of Macau, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
