Eric Clapton (born 1945) is the only person inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame three times: with the Yardbirds, with Cream, and as a solo artist. Chinese rock fans nicknamed him 慢手 ('Slowhand'), translating his English nickname directly. His songs 《泪洒天堂》 (Tears in Heaven) and 《蕾拉》 (Layla) are the best-known in China.

Four-syllable carve-up of 'Clap-ton': 克 for the 'C-/K-' onset, 莱 for '-la-', 普 ('general/common') for '-p-', 顿 ('pause') for '-ton'. The 顿 ending is the standard Chinese choice for English '-ton' surnames (华盛顿 Washington, 牛顿 Newton).
