做生日 (zuòshēngrì): to celebrate a birthday

做生日 specifically means hosting/throwing a birthday celebration — usually for a parent, grandparent, or oneself. Compare 过生日 (guò shēngrì), which simply means 'to have a birthday / to spend one's birthday'. Use 做 when there's an event with food and guests; 过 for the day itself.

Traditionally only birthdays at milestone ages (60, 70, 80...) were 'made' (做寿 = host a longevity celebration), and modesty rules said one shouldn't 做生日 too early in life. Modern usage has loosened that taboo.
