义勇 famously appears in
义勇军进行曲 (Yìyǒngjūn Jìnxíngqǔ — 'March of the Volunteers'), composed in 1935 by Nie Er (
聂耳) and Tian Han (
田汉) during the Japanese invasion. It became the PRC national anthem in 1949. The
义勇军 were civilian volunteer armies that resisted Japanese occupation in Manchuria.
