丹砂; both names refer to the bright red mineral mercury sulfide (HgS). Central to Chinese alchemy (
炼丹) -
丹 itself comes to mean 'elixir' precisely because cinnabar was the iconic alchemical ingredient. Heated cinnabar yields liquid mercury, the alleged immortality drug that actually killed several emperors.
