沙苑子 is a plant-seed medicinal — the dried seeds of Astragalus complanatus (
扁茎黄芪). Named after the
沙苑 sandy grasslands of Shaanxi (Dali county area) where it was traditionally gathered. Classified in TCM as a
补肾 (kidney-tonifying) herb.
