朝贡 (cháogòng) tribute system was the framework for East Asian foreign relations until the late Qing — vassal kingdoms (Korea, Vietnam, Ryukyu, etc.) sent embassies bearing gifts and received imperial recognition and lavish counter-gifts in return.
