The riverfront itself is 外滩 today. 上海滩 calls up the whole city of the old days: its gangsters, dance halls, foreign concessions and fortunes made and lost.
culture
The 1980 TVB series starred 周润发 as the gangster Hui Man-keung and made the name famous across the Chinese-speaking world. Its Cantonese theme song, sung by Frances Yip, is still a karaoke standard.
