Renamed from
徽州 (Huizhou) to Huangshan in 1987 to capitalise on the tourism pull of the UNESCO-listed mountain — a controversial move still debated today, since Huizhou is the cradle of Huizhou culture (
徽文化): the Hui merchants,
徽派建筑 whitewashed-wall architecture, Huizhou cuisine, and the Xin'an school of painting. The city still contains the ancient Huizhou walled city.
