风雅 originally referred to two sections of 《
诗经》 (the Book of Songs) —
国风 ("Airs of the States") and
大雅/
小雅 ("Greater/Lesser Odes"). By extension it came to mean "refined and tasteful in the manner of classical poetry," still its modern flavor. Saying someone is
风雅 implies cultivated literary taste, not just style.
