The city's full name is 韶关市. It holds 丹霞山, the red sandstone mountain that gave the Danxia landform its name, and 南华寺, the temple of the Chan patriarch 慧能.
history
The name joins 韶州, the old prefecture, and 关, the customs pass that stood there in the Ming and Qing. Shaozhou was named after rocks where, in legend, the sage king 舜 played his Shao music.
