进士 was the highest degree in the imperial examination system (科举), awarded after the palace exam (殿试) presided over by the emperor. The system ran from Sui (605) to late Qing (1905).

Top three 进士 had special titles: 状元 (first), 榜眼 (second), 探花 (third). Passing brought instant social status and usually an official appointment.
