Tips

history
In the Tang–Qing imperial exam (科举), the top three palace-exam passers were ranked 状元 (first), 榜眼 (second), and 探花 (third). The name 探花 literally means 'seeking flowers' and dates to a Tang banquet custom where the youngest top graduates were sent to pick flowers from imperial gardens.
register
In modern internet slang 探花 carries a separate vulgar meaning. In historical, literary, or exam-rank contexts, only the imperial-exam sense applies.
