上联 (upper line, ends on a tone) goes on the right of the door as you face it; 下联 (lower line, ends on a tone) goes on the left; the 横批 (horizontal banner) sits above. The tradition dates to the Five Dynasties period and is said to derive from apotropaic 桃符 peach-wood charms.
