Attributed to Wu Cheng'en (吴承恩), late 16th century. The novel follows the Tang monk Xuanzang (唐僧) and his three disciples — Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Seng — on a pilgrimage to India to retrieve Buddhist scriptures. The 1986 CCTV TV adaptation is a cross-generational touchstone; clips of its theme song and Monkey King are instantly recognizable to every mainland viewer.
