Tips

history
Its authorship is disputed: it has been credited both to 刘歆 of the Han and to 葛洪 of the Eastern Jin, who may only have edited it. 西京 'Western Capital' is Chang'an, as against the Eastern Han capital Luoyang.
culture
Several famous stories first appear in it: 匡衡 boring through his wall to read by a neighbour's candle (凿壁偷光), the court painter who made 王昭君 ugly in her portrait, and 卓文君, whose eyebrows were the colour of distant hills.
