history
After forcing the last Qing emperor Puyi to abdicate in February 1912, Yuan took the ROC presidency from Sun Yat-sen. In December 1915 he declared a new '中华帝国' with himself as Emperor . Provincial revolts forced him to rescind the monarchy within 83 days; he died of uremia six months later.
culture
In Chinese historical memory Yuan is the near-archetype of the ('state-stealing brigand') who betrayed the republic. His name is also attached to the silver dollar coins ('大头') that circulated widely in early-Republican China and are still collected today.
